Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two Additions, constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. It was erected around 1920 and is used to commemorate local community members, nine who died in World War One, and four who died in World War Two. The memorial was restored in 2011 and Listed Grade II in February 2018.

Location: Church of St Mary, Church Lane, South Wootton.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. It is used to commemorate local community members, nine who died in World War One, and four who died in World War Two (S4 photographs). The memorial has been described as square in plan with the cross “on a tall tapered shaft, square plinth and three-stepped base” (S1). There were formerly inscriptions to the plinth, in incised lettering.

Unveiled: Erected around 1920. In situ by 1928 as evidenced by the Ordnance Survey map (S6).

2011. Restoration.
The memorial had four polished stone plaques added to each vertical side of the plinth in 2011. There are inscriptions on the plaques in incised, white painted lettering (S4). To the north face is the World War One dedication (Inscription A), with the nine associated names along with rank and regiment to the west face (S5). To the south face are World War Two dates, along with four associated names listed with rank and regiment, corps, or service (Inscription B). To the east face is an epitaph (Inscription C; S4 photographs).
Inscription A: IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ OUR FALLEN HEROES/ OF SOUTH WOOTTON/ 1914 – 1918.
Inscription B: ALSO/ 1939 – 1945/ (4 NAMES).
Inscription C: “THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOR EVERMORE”.
