Summary

An area of former possible multi-period boundaries can be seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The features most likely relate to an area of former field boundaries possibly consisting of multiple phases. Part of a possible rectilinear enclosure is seen in the south of the area; however, it is possible that this is a natural feature. The features are most likely to be Medieval to post-medieval in date, although, its possible that some features (such as the possible enclosure) may be earlier.

Map

August 2021. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
An area of former possible multi-period boundaries can be seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S4). The features most likely relate to an area of former field boundaries possibly consisting of multiple phases. Part of a possible enclosure is seen in the south of the area (centred at approximately TG 1420 2388); However, it is possible that this is feature is natural in origin. If the feature is archaeological in origin it may date to the Iron Age, Roman or Medieval period. The boundary features are most likely to be Medieval – post medieval in date, although, it’s possible that some features may be earlier. Cropmarks of post medieval boundaries which have been mapped on the Tithe, First and Second Edition Ordnance Survey maps (S5-S7) can also be seen in this area. As these features have been recorded in good detail on the historic maps, they have not been mapped as part of this project. A large amount of geological cropmarks are visible within this area and its possible that some of the mapped features are natural in origin. Further possible Medieval-post medieval field boundaries (NHER 7462) can be seen approximately 100m to the south. Multi period finds (NHER 29290 and 32042) have previously been recorded in the vicinity to the mapped features.
