Summary

World War One memorial constructed from wood, in the form of a freestanding triptych shrine with double doors. This memorial was proposed in June and unveiled in September 1919 to commemorate thirty-five local servicemen who died in World War One, nineteen from Honingham and sixteen from East Tuddenham. The memorial was Listed Grade II in August 2018.

Location: Triangular Green, Junction of The Street and Hall Drive, Honingham.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from wood, in the form of a freestanding triptych shrine with double doors. It is used to commemorate thirty-five local servicemen who died in World War One, nineteen from Honingham and sixteen from East Tuddenham. It has been described with a simple triangular-headed canopy covered by a copper alloy, and “doors revealing the calvary with silver-coloured effigy of Christ on a wooden cross. The whole is mounted on ‘legs’ on a concrete platform base” (S1). There are inscriptions on the inside and outside in painted lettering. Prominent reference is made to a son of the Right Honourable Sir Ailwyn Fellowes who commissioned the memorial, by inscribing the name ‘Curly’ (Major Hedworth George Ailwyn Fellowes) on the pediment.
Proposed: 27 June 1919, at a public meeting chaired by the Right Honourable Sir Ailwyn Fellowes.

Unveiled: 28 September 1919 (dedicated by the Bishop of Norwich).

Inscription (base): SO HE PASSED OVER AND ALL THE TRUMPETS/ SOUNDED FOR HIM ON THE OTHER SIDE.
