Full Description
World War One Memorial
Location: St Matthew's Church driveway, Telegraph Lane West, Thorpe Hamlet, Norwich.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone and marble, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate one hundred and twenty-eight servicemen who died in world War One. It is described “with ornate foliate lopes attached to the four quarters of the wheel, on a tapering octagonal shaft with moulded collar and foot, atop a four-sided plinth with chamfered corners and edges, on a three-tiered base” (S1). The whole is raised upon a brick-edged platform. There is an inscription to the memorial in incised, blacked lettering. The principal inscription is to the front face of the plinth (Inscription A) and continues to the upper tier of the base (Inscription B). The associated names are listed in two columns to the remaining three faces of the plinth (S5). The memorial was relocated, possibly around 1982, from within the churchyard of the original St Matthew’s Church (NHER26470) of 1851 at Thorpe Hamlet, to where it currently resides at the driveway of St Matthew’s Church of 1982, Telegraph Lane West, Thorpe Hamlet, Norwich.
