July 2002. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of proposed development site in the grounds of The Orchards (NHER 31591).
This work showed that a naturally laid sand was overlain by 0.7m of developed soils, probably associated with the construction and landscaping of early 19th century formal gardens. A single cut feature of late medieval to early post-medieval date was recorded in the western part of the trench. No other archaeological deposits or features were observed. A small quantity of late medieval/post-medieval pottery was recovered from the garden soils.
