Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two addition, constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding canopied Latin calvary. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate eight members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly one serviceman who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in September 2019.

Location: Church of All Saints, The Street, Upper Sheringham.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding canopied Latin calvary. It is used to commemorate eight members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly one serviceman who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a slender, tapering octagonal shaft with moulded collar and foot, on a square plinth with notched upper corners, atop two-tiered, pentagonal base (upper step shallow, lower step deep and corniced)” (S1). There are inscriptions in relief lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the front face of the plinth (Inscription A), with the associated eight names listed to the faces either side. The latter World War Two dates and associated name is to the rear face (Inscription B). Further dedicatory script is to the upper step of the base, across the three faces to the front (Inscription C; S4).

Unveiled: Erected around 1920.
Inscription A: TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND TO KEEP IN REMEMBRANCE/ THE/ MEN OF UPPER SHERINGHAM/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR/ RIGHT AND JUSTICE IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918.
Inscription B: 1939 - 1945/ (NAME).
Inscription C: GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN// THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN// HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIEND.
