Full Description
World War One Memorial, with World War Two and Early 21st-century Additions
Location: Church of All Saints, The Street, Upper Sheringham.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone with plaques of polished granite, in the form of a small freestanding decoratively carved cross. It is used to commemorate ninety local men who died in World War One, and latterly twenty-five serviceman who died in World War Two (S5). It is described as “on a tapering, square column with moulded cap and base, set upon a tall pedestal and a square base” (S1). There are inscriptions to the plaques in incised, black painted lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the north-east face (Inscription A), with the associated ninety names listed to the remaining faces. The latter World War Two dates are inscribed to the front of the column, above a plaque listing the associated twenty-five names (Inscription B).

Unveiled: 15 February 1920 (by Admiral of the Fleet, Sir A.K. Wilson, VC).
Inscription A: TO THE/ GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF THE/ 90/ SWAFFHAM MEN/ WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 18/ ERECTED BY/ THEIR FELLOW TOWNSMEN.
Inscription B: 1939-1945/ (25 NAMES).

July 2011. Additions.
A further two plaques of polished granite were added to the base of the memorial. They each commemorate the Far Eastern prisoners of war and all East Anglians who have died since 1945, and they are inscribed in incised, black painted lettering (Inscription C and D respectively).
Unveiled: Rededicated July 2011 (by the Bishop of Norwich, the Right Reverend G. James).
Inscription C: IN MEMORY OF/ THE SWAFFHAM/ AND DISTRICT/ FAR EAST PRISONERS OF WAR/ 1941 – 1945/ WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM/ 2011.
Inscription D: IN MEMORY OF/ THE FALLEN OF/ EAST ANGLIA/ 1945 – TO PRESENT DAY/ LEST WE FORGET.
