Summary

World War One Memorial with World War Two addition, constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding cross with a carved cross fleury to the face. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate thirty-seven local servicemen who served in World War One, ten of which died, and latterly one serviceman who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in November 2019.

Location: Churchyard of the Church of St Botolph, Gravel Pit Hill, Stow Bedon.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding cross with a carved cross fleury to the face. It is used to commemorate thirty-seven local servicemen who served in World War One, ten of which died, and latterly one serviceman who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a short shaft with moulded foot, atop a slightly tapering plinth on a three-tiered platform” (S1). There are inscriptions in incised lettering. The World War One dedication is to the east face of the plinth along with ten associated names listed (Inscription A). Dedications to those who returned are to the north and south faces of the plinth, with a total of twenty-seven associated names listed across the two faces (Inscription B and C respectively). The latter World War Two dates are to the east face of the platform’s upper tier, in line with one associated name (Inscription D; S4).
