Summary

World War One Memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from flint with ashlar dressings, abutting the churchyard boundary wall for the Holy Trinity Church (NHER6423) it takes the form of an angled or canted memorial wall. Proposed between 1919 and 1921 this memorial was constructed by stonemason H. Palmer, stonemason of Sheringham. It was unveiled November 1921 to commemorate thirty-five men from East and West Runton who died in World War One. Latterly a replacement central panel was unveiled in June 1951 to commemorate sixteen local servicemen who died in World War Two. The memorial was restored in the 1980s and was Listed Grade II in October 2019.

Location: 36m south-east of the Church of the Holy Trinity, Cromer Road (A149), West Runton.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from flint with ashlar dressings, abutting the churchyard boundary wall for the Holy Trinity Church (NHER6423) it takes the form of an angled or canted memorial wall. It is used to commemorate thirty-five men from East and West Runton who died in World War One, and latterly sixteen local servicemen who died in World War Two. It is described with “cut and squared flints laid in regular courses with ashlar dressings. It has a moulded cornice and a frieze”, and “three panels fixed to the front of the memorial” (S1). There are inscriptions in incised, painted lettering. To the frieze is the principal dedication (Inscription A). The World War One dates, and thirty-five associated names are listed across the outer panels (Inscriptions B and C). The latter World War Two dedication is to the central panel along with sixteen associated names listed (Inscription D).

Unveiled: 20 November 1921, with a secondary unveiling on 17 June 1951.

Inscription C: (17 NAMES)/ 1914-1918.
Inscription D: TO THE MEN OF/ RUNTON/ WHO FELL / (16 NAMES)/ 1939-1945.
