Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2016 recorded only a single ditch and a possible pit. The ditch was poorly dated but potentially medieval. There was therefore no evidence to suggest that the churchyard associated with SS Peter and Paul's Church (NHER 8957) had ever extended into this area.

Map

October 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The two trenches excavated revealed only two features; an undated possible pit and a later ditch. The former had an irregular base and a sterile fill so was potentially of natural origin. It was cut by a roughly east-to-west aligned ditch that produced a small number of finds including a single medieval pottery sherd, animal bones, small pieces of fired clay and iron smithing slag. It is therefore possible that this feature was associated with some form of medieval boundary.
