Map

September 2014-March 2015. Excavation.
Excavation of footprint of small extension to Thornage Hall ('Guy’s Bedroom').
This work revealed several features, the earliest of which appeared to be an undated north-to-south aligned ditch. This was cut by a large pit that contained post-medieval pottery and ceramic building material. This was in turn cut by a second pit which only observed in section. Both discrete features were truncated by a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear feature which produced fragments of animal bone and glass. The orientation of this feature suggests that it may have been related to the probable walled garden depicted at this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six Inch map (S1).
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
