Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2013 revealed a number of ditches and two possible pits. The ditches were all undated, although their alignments suggest they were probably not of great antiquity. A fragment of post-medieval/modern ceramic building material found in one of the possible pits was though the only find recovered.

Map

March 2013. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The three trenches excavated revealed a small number of linear features and two possible pits, the majority of which produced no dating evidence.
The majority of linear features lay in a trench at western end of the site. These included a number of west-north-west to east-south-east aligned ditches and one aligned east-to-west. The fact these ditches were aligned roughly perpendicular to the adjacent road suggests they were probably field or property boundaries of relatively recent date, although no corresponding features are marked on the available 19th-century maps. A shallow sub-square feature in this trench was potentially the base of a truncated pit. The second possible pit was a small irregular feature to the east that produced a single post-medieval/modern brick or tile fragment (the only find recovered).
