Map

Churchyard of St Mary's Church (NHER 7313).

1992. Stray Find.
Found by [1] in soil from electricity cable trench about 15m north of north porch:
1 Late Saxon pottery sherd. Base sherd, Thetford-type ware.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NLA), 2 December 1992.
Previously recorded under NHER 7313.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 11 April 2022.

September 2019. Watching Brief.
Maintained during excavation of two trial pits dug to investigate source of structural problems in west tower of church.
The first was excavated adjacent to the tower and exposed the footing for a tower buttress. This was associated with a construction trench and comprised knapped flint nodules bonded with mortar. The second pit, placed to investigate the extent of the roots of an adjacent tree, revealed no significant features or deposits. In both trial pits the natural chalky boulder clay was overlain by a thick clay silt layer interpreted as a potentially alluvium from a nearby steam. This was overlain by subsoil and topsoil deposits with a combined depth of approximately 1.1m.
No human remains were observed and no finds were recovered.
Information from draft report.
P. Watkins (HES), 11 April 2022.
