Summary

A world war two horseshoe-shaped tunnel shelter constructed in 1939 for the employees of Reckitt and Colman Ltd. This is the easternmost of two shelters and retains some of its original features, including benches around the outer edges and mens and womens lavatory blocks.

A world war two horseshoe-shaped tunnel shelter constructed in 1939 for the employees of Reckitt and Colman Ltd. Rounded entrances at either end lead to narrow tunnels with a rectangular section which in turn lead to a larger east-west space strengthened by timber posts and three brick reinforcing walls. This shelter retains some of its original features, including benches around the outer edges and mens and womens lavatory blocks.
It was one of two shelters were constructed on the Colman site. The second shelter wasl ocated to the west and was larger, with wider tunnels and two brick-walled rooms located at the southwestern corner but fittings were removed during the post-war period when it was converted to a chemical store.
