Map

September 2013-January 2014. Watching Brief.
Maintained during installation of two wind turbines.
Excavations at the sites of the turbines themselves revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. Groundworks associated with the installation of cables and the creation of new access tracks were also monitored, although these works also revealed nothing of interest. It should though be noted that the excavations for the latter were relatively shallow and did not penetrate beneath the subsoil layer present.
Finds recovered included a small number of worked flints of probable Neolithic or Bronze Age date.
A metal-detecting survey undertaken during these works recovered a range of objects, the earlier of which was a 19th-centruy coin. The majority of the remaining metal objects were probably associated with the World War Two airfield (NHER 3063), including nail fragments, bolts, washers and miscellaneous ferrous items. The only finds of any particular interest are a 0.50 calibre Browning machine gun round and a steel dog tag that had belonged to an American serviceman.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
