Full Description
January 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of proposed development site (Area 2).
It had originally been planned that eight trenches of standard length would be excavated at this location but this proved to be impossible due to the high water table and the depth of material overlying the natural geological deposits. It was therefore decided that four much shorter trenches would be excavated (Trenches 22, 24 and 27-28), with their primary aim being to assess the nature of the deposits present across the site.
A thick layer of dark brown-grey silty peat was exposed at the base of the westernmost trench. This organic layer was not seen elsewhere, unlike an overlying probably alluvial layer of blueish-grey clayey silts which was present in all four of the trenches. This deposit was sealed by a reasonably thick subsoil layer.
The one feature recorded was a large, sub-circular probable pit within one of the southernmost trenches. Due to the adjusted remit of the work this feature was left unexcavated. A single flint flake of possible Bronze Age or Iron Age date was however recovered from its surface.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
