Full Description
May 2016. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of chalet bungalow.
The reduction of the ground level within the building footprint exposed four linear features and a single possible post-hole. The linear features included a north-to-south aligned ditch that produced two sherds of medieval pottery. Two similarly-aligned possible ditches and a narrower north-north-east to south-south-west feature were also recorded, all of which appeared to terminate in the northern half of the site. None produced any dating evidence. The possible post-hole was also undated.
The only other find of note was a residual flint blade of probable Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date.
The western end of the site had clearly seen significant recent disturbance with what appeared to be a concrete-lined tank exposed and a made ground layer lying directly above the natural geological deposits. This truncation was though relatively localised, with an undisturbed subsoil layer present across the remainder of the site.
See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.398).
