Full Description
November 2015. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of footing trench for extension to existing dwelling.
This trench revealed no archaeologically-significant features.
There was clear evidence for past disturbance of the site, with the natural sandy clay overlain by what appeared to be a dumped spread of material containing frequent patches of white, grey and cream mortar and a lens of cockle and oyster shells. Fragments of mortar retained for analysis were probably pieces of bedding for a tile floor and were possibly of medieval or post-medieval date. This material was sealed by a sequence of subsoil and topsoil layers.
The small number of unstratified finds recovered includes single sherds of Late Saxon/medieval and post-medieval pottery, fragments of animal bone, a medieval buckle and copper alloy possible handle ferrule of 19th- or 20th-century date.
See report (S1) for further details.
