Summary

A watching brief maintained during the construction of new houses at this site in 2015 recorded no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. The construction and demolition of earlier, 19th- and 20th-century buildings had clearly resulted in considerable disturbance, with demolition debris lying directly above the natural sands. A late post-medieval brick cellar was also noted.

Map

June 2015. Watching Brief.
Maintained during construction of three new terraced properties.
The excavation of foundation trenches and other intrusive groundworks revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
There was clear evidence for significant recent disturbance with what appeared to be post-medieval or later demolition material lying directly above the natural sand. It is likely that much of this disturbance occurred during the construction and subsequent demolition of the flat-roofed 20th-century building that had formerly occupied the eastern end of the site. This had replaced a more extensive row of late 19th-century terraced houses that can be seen on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six Inch map (S1). A brick-built cellar recorded in part of the site had probably been associated with these houses.
No finds were recovered.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
