Summary

A watching brief maintained during the creation of a new horse ménage at this location in 2018 recorded no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. It should though be noted that the natural sands were only exposed in small parts of the site, so it is possible that any remains present were obscured by the surviving remnants of the subsoil layer. The unstratified finds recovered during this work were mostly post-medieval in date, the most notable exceptions being small quantities of Iron Age, Iron Age or Early Saxon, Roman and Middle Saxon pottery.

Map

October 2018. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new horse ménage.
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were exposed. The soil strip ménage was however relatively shallow, with only small patches of natural sand exposed. It is therefore possible that any remains present were obscured by the surviving remnants of the subsoil layer.
A number of unstratified finds were recovered, including:
Undatable iron nail fragments.
1 Iron Age pottery sherd.
2 Iron Age or Early Saxon pottery sherds.
3 Roman pottery sherds.
1 Middle Saxon pottery sherd.
1 post-medieval coin, 25 pottery sherds, 3 clay tobacco pipe stems, copper alloy buttons and a harness junction
14 post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
Oyster shell was also noted.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.82).
