Summary

Two phases of archaeological work undertaken prior to and during the installation of a new water pipeline revealed no significant remains. Two trial trenches excavated in 2018 revealed only a post-medieval ditch associated with a former field boundary depicted on 19th-centrury maps. A subsequent watching brief maintained during the installation of the pipeline in 2019 was focused on the area where its route coincided with the probable line of a Roman road (NHER 1289). There was no evidence for surviving features or deposits associated with this road.

Map

November 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Ringstead Sustainability Reduction Scheme pipeline (Trenches 3 and 4; mitigation Area A).
Two trenches were excavated at this location, one to the west of the probable line of the Peddar’s Way Roman road (NHER 1289) and one to the east. A north-east to south-west aligned ditch in the western trench was the only feature recorded. This ditch contained a medieval or post-medieval strap end and a post-medieval brick and coincided with a former field boundary depicted on the Sedgeford tithe map of 1840 (S1).
See report (S2) for further details.

January 2019. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of Ringstead Sustainability Reduction Scheme pipeline (Watching Brief Area 1; mitigation Area A).
This watching brief took place between the two evaluation trenches, at the point where the pipeline crossed the probable line of the Roman road. The excavation of a pipe trench revealed no evidence for surviving remains associated with the road. Although layers of made ground were recorded these were associated with a spur projecting northwards from the railway embankment to the south.
See report (S2) for further details.
