Summary

A watching brief maintained during topsoil stripping for a pipeline easement in 2019 recorded two perpendicular ditches, at least one of which was of probable Roman date. It should be noted that natural geological deposits were only exposed in a small part of the site and it is therefore likely that additional archaeologically-significant features were present elsewhere but obscured by the remaining subsoil.

Map

February 2019. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping along final section of easement for Ringstead Sustainability Reduction Scheme pipeline (mitigation Area E).
The underlying subsoil proved to be thin and was inadvertently fully removed in one small area, revealing an intersecting pair of east-to-west and north-to-south aligned ditches. One of these features was investigated and found to contain a small assemblage of Roman pottery, along with fragments of fired clay.
Unstratified finds included a single Late Saxon pottery sherd and several medieval sherds.
See report (S1) for further details.
