Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2021 and 2022 revealed no evidence for significant remains, although these results were far from conclusive. An initial geophysical survey was hindered by the presence of a spread of ferrous debris and subsequent trial trenching demonstrated the presence of deep modern made ground deposits, the full depth of which could not be established.

Map

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 17 October 2022.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 105).
This survey revealed no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies, with the entire area examined covered by a spread of ferrous debris. This negative result is unsurprising given that subsequent trial trenching demonstrated the presence of deep modern made ground deposits at this location (see below).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 October 2022.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT05; Trenches 128-132).
The five trenches excavated at this location all revealed recent made ground deposits containing modern plastics and construction waste, the full depth of which could not be established due to the instability of the material (although it was shown to be in excess of 1.5m).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 October 2022.
