Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 recorded a small number of potentially archaeologically-significant discrete and linear anomalies. An undated pit that potentially corresponded with one of the former was the only feature identified during subsequent trial trenching in 2022. This pit may also relate to a discrete cropmark visible on aerial photographs of this location but there was no evidence for surviving remains associated with two adjacent linear cropmarks (all part of a small group recorded as NHER 27930). There was some limited artefactual evidence for prehistoric activity in the general vicinity of the site, with a Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint flake and several Middle Bronze Age and Early Iron Age pottery sherds recovered from a possible colluvial layer.

Map

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 403).
Potentially archaeologically-significant responses included a group of three strong discrete anomalies at the northern end of the site and several weaker, relatively short linear anomalies to the south. All are recorded as being of undetermined origin.
It is possible that one of the discrete anomalies relates to a discrete cropmark visible on aerial photographs. There was however no evidence for surviving remains associated with two adjacent linear cropmarks (all part of a group recorded as NHER 27930).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P3TT02; Trenches 1004-1011).
The eight trenches excavated at this location revealed only a single undated pit and a patch of material interpreted as a colluvial layer. The pit lay at the northern end of the site and potentially corresponded with one of the discrete geophysical anomalies identified in this area. This feature also potentially relates to the single discrete cropmark mapped at this location (NHER 27930). There was again no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with the adjacent linear cropmarks.
The colluvial layer was not extensive, being present across only approximately one third of a single trench towards the northern end of the site. A small assemblage of prehistoric finds was recovered from this material, including a blade-like flint flake of Mesolithic/Early Neolithic date and several sherds of Middle Bronze Age and Early Iron Age pottery.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
