Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 identified a number of linear anomalies that potentially represent archaeologically-significant features, although their nature is far from certain. Subsequent limited trial trenching in 2022 revealed only a single ditch, which coincides with a former field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 19 October 2022.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 401).
This survey identified no anomalies of obvious archaeological significance. The most notable responses were a number of weak linear anomalies, although these were all categorised as being of undetermined origin. The remaining anomalies were mostly thought to be either natural or agricultural in origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 October 2022.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P3TT03; Trenches 1014-1017).
The four trenches excavated at this location revealed only a single west-north-west to east-south-east aligned ditch. Although no dating evidence was recovered this feature appears to coincide with a former field boundary depicted on the Kelling Tithe map of 1838 (S2).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 October 2022.
