Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2021 and 2022 revealed no convincing evidence for the presence of significant remains. An initial geophysical identified only a small number of fragmentary linear and curvilinear anomalies of uncertain origin – none of which seem particularly likely to represent archaeological remains. Subsequent limited trial trenching in 2022 had entirely negative results.

Map

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 19 October 2022.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Areas 5 and 501-503).
No anomalies of obvious archaeological significance were identified within the three blocks of land examined at this location. The only anomalies of note were a small number of linear and curvilinear anomalies of uncertain origin, the majority of which lay in the northernmost part of the site. There were though all short, fragmentary responses and unlikely to represent sub-surface remains.
The remaining anomalies identified were all deemed to be either natural or agricultural in origin.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a previously-identified linear cropmark that crosses the southern end of the site (part of a group recorded as NHER 27168).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 October 2022.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P3TT05 and P3TT06; Trenches 1024-1043).
The twenty trenches excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. Although one of the trenches coincided with the linear cropmark crossing the southernmost part of the site (NHER 27168) there was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.
No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 October 2022.
