Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2021 and 2022 revealed little in the way of significant remains. A geophysical survey of this site undertaken in 2021/2022 identified a number of weak linear and discrete anomalies which were categorised as being of undetermined origin but unlikely to represent archaeological features. Subsequent trial trenching in 2022 recorded only two adjacent ditches. These produced no finds but appear to have coincided with the line of a former field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 24 October 2022.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 7).
This survey identified only a series of weak responses, all of which are regarded as being of undetermined origin. These include a pair of broad, elongated anomalies and a number of much shorter, narrower linear anomalies. None appear likely to represent archaeologically-significant remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 October 2022.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT06; Trenches 133-138 and 945).
A pair of adjacent north-to-south aligned ditches in the north-east part of the site were the only features revealed by the seven trenches excavated. Although these produced no finds they were most likely of post-medieval date – coinciding with the line of a former field boundary that can be seen on the Bodham tithe map of 1841 (S2).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 October 2022.
