Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2022 revealed three pits, all of which were of uncertain date (a Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint bladelet being the only find recorded). There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface feature associated with a number of cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of this location. These included several ephemeral curvilinear cropmark that had been thought to potentially represent the remains of a Bronze Age barrow (NHER 30316).

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT07; Trenches 139-142 and 940).
The five trenches excavated at this location revealed only a small number of discrete features of uncertain date.
These included a pit at the southern end of the site, the fill of which contained abundant charcoal and occasional burnt flints. A Mesolithic/Early Neolithic backed flint bladelet found in this feature was the only datable artefact recovered. A sample taken from its fill produced only charcoal.
Burnt flint was also present in a much larger sub-circular pit at the northern end of the site.
A trench placed to investigate cropmarks potentially associated with a Bronze Age barrow (NHER 30316) revealed no clear evidence for related sub-surface remains. Although a feature did coincide with one of the possible ring-ditches, this appeared to terminate within the trench and was most likely some form of pit. It should be noted that these cropmarks were recorded as being particularly ephemeral when formerly mapped in 2003.
There was also no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a series of other fragmentary linear cropmarks mapped at this location (NHER 27983).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 October 2022.
