Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2017 identified several clusters of potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies. The most notable response was a rectilinear anomaly that was shown by subsequent trial trenching to coincide with two ditches – suggesting it was probably a small enclosure of some kind. Unfortunately neither ditch produced any dating evidence. Medieval pottery was though recovered from a number of nearby ditches – suggesting these remains were most likely associated with the probable medieval building previously identified in the field immediately to the east (NHER 32947).

Map

February-March 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on possible route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (GS02).
This location was part of one of 26 sites identified as a priority for examination due to their archaeological potential.
The most notable response is a small rectangular anomaly measuring approximately 23m x 9m in the south-east part of the site that may represent the remains of either a building or a small enclosure. A nearby cluster of discrete anomalies may also represent archaeologically-significant remains – being potentially the result of building debris or an area of small-scale industrial activity.
A cluster of fragmentary linear anomalies close to the western edge of the field are also potentially of archaeological interest, although it is noted that the lack of any pattern and their weak nature makes interpretation difficult.
A cluster of discrete anomalies is also present in the north-east part of the site, although these are regarded as being of undetermined origin.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P1TT01; Trenches 1-7).
A total of seven trenches were excavated along the eastern edge of the site, several of which were positioned to target geophysical anomalies identified by the preceding survey. The rectangular anomaly in the south-east corner of the site was shown to coincide with a pair of ditches, demonstrating it to be a small enclosure rather than the remains of a building. Unfortunately neither feature produced any dating evidence. A single medieval pottery sherd was though recovered from a parallel ditch to the south and further medieval pottery was recovered from a group of ditches that coincided with the area of magnetic disturbance recorded immediately to the east. The most convincingly dated of these ditches was an east-north-east to west-south-west aligned feature that produced 10 medieval pottery sherds, along with fragments of lava quern, animal bone and an undiagnostic fragment of ironwork. A single medieval pottery sherd was also recovered from one of several adjacent north-north-east to south-south-west aligned ditches. The other ditches in the group were though undated, as was a single pit recorded at this location. An undated east-to-west aligned ditch to the north of these potentially medieval remains was the only other feature recorded.
The cluster of discrete geophysical anomalies recorded in the north-east part of the site were found to have no associated sub-surface remains.
Evidence for earlier activity was limited to a small assemblage of prehistoric work flints, all of which were almost certainly residual within later features.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
