Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 revealed only linear and discrete anomalies of uncertain origin, with subsequent trial trenching in 2022 demonstrating that the more notable examples had no associated sub-surface remains. Three ditches were recorded, one of which contained a small amount of Roman pottery and fragments of lava quern.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 28 May 2025.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 11).
This survey identified a number of scattered linear and discrete anomalies regarded as being of undetermined origin. These are therefore of possible archaeological interest, although a natural origin is probably just as likely in most cases. The more notable responses included a group of short, straighter, north-west to south-east and north-east to south-west aligned linear anomalies at the northern end of the site.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 28 May 2025.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT14; Trenches 191-202).
The twelve trenches excavated at this location revealed three ditches, all of which lay in the central part of the site. These included a north-west to south-east aligned feature that produced a single Early Iron Age pottery sherd, two small Roman pottery sherds and fragments of lava quern. The two other ditches were undated.
There was no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with the group of linear geophysical anomalies recorded at the northern end of the site by the preceding survey.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 28 May 2025.
