Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2017 identified little of potential archaeological interest, with the only notable responses being a cluster of discrete anomalies of uncertain origin. Subsequent trial trenching had similarly negative results, with the majority of the trenches excavated revealing no archaeologically-significant remains, including one placed to coincide with the cluster of geophysical anomalies. An undated ditch was the only feature recorded.

Map

February-March 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on possible route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (GS06).
This site was one of 26 identified as a priority for examination due to their archaeological potential.
The survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest. The most notable responses are a cluster of discrete positive anomalies, although it is suggested these are potentially either natural in origin or the result of recent agricultural activity.
Scattered discrete dipolar 'spikes' and larger areas of weak magnetic disturbance are probably the result of ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P1TT03; Trenches 13-20).
The majority of the eight trenches excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant remains, including one placed to investigate the cluster of discrete anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey.
The one feature recorded was a north-east to south-west aligned ditch at the northern end of the site. This produced no dating evidence.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 May 2025.
