Summary

Fieldwork at this site between 2021 and 2022 revealed on limited evidence for archaeologically-significant remains. An initial geophysical survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest, although a linear anomaly and several scattered discrete anomalies were regarded as being of undetermined origin and therefore potentially associated sub-surface remains. A ditch associated with a former field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps was also identified. Subsequent trial trenching uncovered only a ditch and pit, both of which were undated. The pit was though of some interest as it contained fragments of smelting slag and hearth lining, demonstrating that industrial activity had been taking place somewhere in the vicinity.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 19).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest. A slightly curvilinear west-north-west to east-south-east aligned linear anomaly at the northern end of the site and a number of scattered discrete anomalies are though regarded as being of undetermined origin and may therefore represent sub-surface remains.
A north-west to south-east aligned linear anomaly in the southern half of the site corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Corpusty tithe map (S2).
The northernmost part of the site was partially obscured by the strong dipolar responses associated with a north-east to south-west aligned modern service.
There was no evidence of a sub-square enclosure visible as cropmarks on aerial imagery at the southern end of this location, the western side of which should have fallen within the area examined (NHER 69775). This is surprising as imagery showing this feature is quite recent and it should be noted that the survey also failed to identify any trace of a former post-medieval field boundary that bisected the enclosure and is also associated with a clear cropmark.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 January 2026 and 15 March 2026.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT26; Trenches 300-311).
The 12 trenches excavated revealed only a single north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditch and an isolated pit, neither of which produced any dating evidence. The pits was though of some interest, having steep sides and a flat base and producing fragments of probable smelting slag and pieces of fired clay heath lining. A sample from its fill also produced charcoal and mollusc shells.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 January 2026.
