Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 identified nothing of definite archaeological interest. Subsequent trial trenching also had largely negative results, with only two ditches recorded. One of these features corresponded with a former field boundary shown on a 19th-century map but the second was undated.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 26).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest. The only responses of note are a number of reasonably strong discrete anomalies regarded as being of undetermined origin. Various other responses are all thought to be either natural in origin or associated with recent agricultural activity.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 March 2026.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P3TT15; Trenches 1139-1145).
The seven trenches excavated at this location revealed only two ditches, including a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned feature that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Salle tithe map (S2). This ditch produced late post-medieval to modern pottery sherds, a post-medieval clay tobacco pipe stem fragment and a piece of medieval/post-medieval roof tile. The second ditch was a north-west to south-east aligned feature that contained no dating evidence.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
