Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2022 uncovered an Early Iron Age pit and three ditches of uncertain date. One of the ditches produced a single Roman pottery sherd, while another was found to contain a fragment of medieval/post-medieval ceramic building material. The third produced no dating evidence but was potentially associated with one of several similarly-aligned former field boundaries shown on a 19th-century map.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT36; Trenches 407-409 and 415-419).
The eight trenches excavated at this location revealed a pit and three ditches. The pit contained a small assemblage of Early Iron Age pottery and a number of prehistoric flint flakes but a sample from its fill produced only a small amount of charcoal.
The ditches included two east-to-west aligned features, one of which contained a single Roman pottery sherd and the other a fragment of medieval/post-medieval ceramic building material. The third ditch was a roughly north-west to south-east aligned feature at the northern end of the site that produced no dating evidence but was potentially associated with one of several similar-aligned former field boundaries shown at this location in the Reepham tithe map (S2).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
