Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 recorded nothing of definite archaeological interest, with only a small number of linear and discrete anomalies of undetermined origin identified. Subsequent trial trenching in 2022 did however recovered some limited artefactual evidence for prehistoric activity, including Mesolithic/Early Neolithic worked flints and small quantities of Early Neolithic, Early Bronze Age and Early Iron Age pottery. The bulk of this material was though residual within a group of intercutting pits that also produced sherds of Roman and medieval pottery. Across the remainder of the site remains were largely limited to several widely dispersed ditches. These ditches were mostly of uncertain date, with finds limited to single sherds of Early Neolithic and medieval pottery. One ditch does though correspond with a former field boundary depicted on 19th century maps.

Map

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 3201).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological significance. A number of curvilinear and discrete anomalies are recorded as being of undetermined origin and could therefore represent sub-surface remains, although a natural origin is also possible.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT38; Trenches 437-444 and 451-453).
The 11 trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of pits and ditches. A small assemblage of prehistoric pottery was recovered, which appears to represent multiple phases of activity, comprising a mix of sherds identified as Early Neolithic, Early Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. The bulk of this material was though recovered from a cluster of intercutting pits at the eastern end of the site, which also produced small quantities of Roman and medieval pottery. A small number of prehistoric worked flints were also recovered from these features, including several flakes of probable Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic date. These features were mostly likely extraction pits of medieval or later date.
Elsewhere on the site prehistoric finds were limited to single sherds of Early Neolithic recovered from an otherwise undated ditch and an adjacent pit approximately 50m to the west of the main pit group.
Across the remainder of the site remains were largely limited to a small number of widely dispersed ditches. These included a north-east to south-west aligned feature at the western end of the site which contained a single sherd of medieval pottery. The only ditch that can be regarded as convincingly dated was a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned feature crossing the central part of the site, which coincides with a former field boundary depicted on the Booton tithe map (S2).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
