Summary

Geophysical surveys of this site in 2017 and 2021/2022 revealed nothing of definite archaeological interest, with only fragmentary linear and curvilinear anomalies of uncertain origin recorded. Subsequent limited trial trenching in 2022 had similarly negative results.

Map

October 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on possible route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (GS11).
The eastern half of the site was examined as part of this initial survey, which targeted sites deemed to be of greater archaeological potential.
Nothing of potential archaeological interest was recorded.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 April 2025.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 16 April 2025.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 40).
This survey of the entire site identified a number of fragmentary linear and curvilinear anomalies, all of which are recorded as being of undetermined origin. Some may represent archaeologically-significant remains, although their irregular forms suggest a natural original is more likely in most cases.
Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies and various other areas of magnetic disturbance were probable caused by ferrous material on or near the surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 April 2025.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT49; Trenches 540 and 541).
The two trenches excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 April 2025.
