Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2017 and 2022 identified two ditches that had probable been associated with field boundaries of relatively recent date. One was found to contain medieval pottery and the other produced post-medieval finds. A small number of residual prehistoric finds were also recovered.

Map

October 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on possible route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (GS11).
Site examined as part of an initial survey that targeted locations deemed to be of greater archaeological potential.
This survey identified two linear anomalies, one aligned north-north-east and south-south-west and the other west-north-west to east-south-east – both of which are likely to represent ditches associated with former field boundaries. No corresponding boundaries can be seen on the available 19th-century maps, although the orientation of these anomalies suggests they potentially represented earlier, lost elements of the field system present at this time.
Various other amorphous anomalies are of likely natural origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P1TT12; Trenches 64-69).
The six trenches excavated at this location revealed only two ditches, which corresponded with the north-north-east and south-south-west and the other west-north-west to east-south-east anomalies recorded by the preceding geophysical survey. The latter produced two sherds of medieval pottery and the former a post-medieval brick fragment and post-medieval buckle – supporting the suggestion these features had probably been associated with field boundaries of relatively recent date. Residual prehistoric pottery sherds and worked flints were also recovered from the ditches.
One of the ditches was cut through a layer that produced a single prehistoric worked flint and an additional medieval pottery sherd.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
