Full Description
May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 4302).
This survey revealed little of potential archaeological interest. An east-to-west aligned linear anomaly at the southern end of the site is thought to represent an infilled ditch associated with a former field boundary of relatively recent date (although it doesn't appear on any of the available 19th-century maps). A short linear anomaly in the central part of the site is regarded as being of undetermined origin.
The remaining anomalies are all deemed to be either of natural origin or the result of modern agricultural activity.
There was no clear evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a possible causewayed ring ditch visible on aerial photographs at the north-eastern end of the site (NHER 50656).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT55; Trenches 571-575).
Archaeologically-significant remains were only exposed in the easternmost of the five trenches excavated at this location, which had been positioned to coincide with the possible causewayed ring ditch visible on aerial photographs (NHER 50656). Although two ditches were exposed these north-west to south-east and north-east to south-west aligned features appear to have been unrelated to the cropmarks. The latter contained a small, mixed assemblage of finds comprising a prehistoric worked flint, single sherds of Roman and post-medieval pottery, a piece of medieval/post-medieval roof tile and a fragment of undiagnostic ceramic building material. A pair of intercutting probable quarry pits lay between the two ditches, one of which was found to contain a single sherd of late post-medieval pottery. These pits coincided with the discrete cropmark visible at the centre of the possible ring-ditch.
It appears that none of the excavated trenches coincided with the two linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
