Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 recorded a number of scattered linear, curvilinear and discrete anomalies, all of which were regarded as being of undetermined origin. Whilst some potentially represent archaeologically-significant remains the majority are probably of natural origin. Subsequent trial trenching identified only two pits with charcoal-rich fills and a single ditch – none of which produced any dating evidence.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 46).
This survey identified a number of linear and curvilinear anomalies regarded as being of undetermined origin. These could therefore represent archaeologically-significant remains, although a natural origin is probably more likely.
A single strong discrete anomalies recorded at the southern end of the site may though represent an infilled pit.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT60; Trenches 599-603).
The five trenches excavated at this location revealed only three undated features – a north-west to south-east aligned ditch at the northern end of the site and two pits in a trench to the south. One of these pits had a notable charcoal-rich fill, although a sample taken from this deposit produced only a moderate quantity of charred weed seeds.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 September 2023.
