Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2020 and 2022 revealed little in the way of significant remains. Geophysical surveys identified nothing of definite archaeological interest and trial trenching in the western part of the site also had entirely negative results. Trial trenching in the eastern part of the site did uncover a small number of scattered pits and possible post-holes, but none produced any dating evidence.

Map

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 19 February 2025.

November 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Area 12).
This survey of a narrow strip along the western edge of the site revealed little of potential archaeological interest. The only responses of note are two short linear anomalies regarded as being of undetermined origin. Various scattered dipolar discrete anomalies were probable caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 February 2025.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 4703).
This survey of a relatively narrow strip at the eastern end of the site revealed nothing of definite archaeological significance. The more notable responses include a strong discrete anomaly and a weak sub-circular anomaly, both of which are regarded as being of undermined origin.
The majority of the other anomalies were probably the result of either variations in the underlying geology or recent agricultural activity.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 February 2025.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P3TT18; Trenches 1168-1176).
The nine trenches excavated at this location revealed only a small number of scattered pits and possible post-holes – none of which produced any dating evidence.
The most notable feature was a pit with charcoal-rich fills that contained a number of burnt flints. A sample from one of these deposits produced only charcoal and burnt flint.
One of the trenches coincided with a group of fragmentary linear cropmarks at TG 1213 1430 thought to potentially represent an enclosure and field boundaries of Iron Age to Roman date (NHER 50610). No corresponding remains were identified.
Another trench placed to coincide with the site of a possible World War Two military structure visible on aerial photographs (NHER 50611) also revealed no associated sub-surface remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 February 2025.

May-July 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Field TT16; Trenches 110-112, 114-115 and 120-124).
The ten trenches excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with fragmentary linear cropmarks mapped at TG 1188 1430 and TG 1194 1424 (both part of a group of potentially Iron Age to Roman remains recorded as NHER 50610
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 February 2024.
