Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2021 and 2022 recorded little in the way of significant remains. An initial geophysical survey identified a number of weak linear responses, although these were mostly of probable natural origin. The one exception was an anomaly that appeared to coincided with a previously recorded cropmark (part of a group of undated features recorded as NHER 54362). Subsequent trial trenching revealed a fairly substantial corresponding ditch, although no dating evidence was recovered. Other remains were limited to a small number of scattered pits and ditches, all of which were also undated.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 52).
This survey recorded nothing of definite archaeological interest. The most notable responses were a series of weak linear anomalies, which are all regarded as being of undetermined origin. Most are fairly short and/or irregular and unlikely to represent archaeologically-signfiicant remains. One possible exception is a north-west to south-east aligned linear anomaly at the northern end of the site that appears to coincide with a previously recorded cropmark (part of a group of dispersed, fragmentary features of uncertain date recorded as NHER 54362).
The majority of the other linear and discrete anomalies were probably the result of either variations in the underlying geology or recent agricultural activity.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 February 2025.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P3TT23; Trenches 957-966).
The ten trenches excavated revealed only a small number of scattered pits and ditches, none of which produced any dating evidence. The most notable of these features was a fairly substantial north-west to south-east aligned ditch at the northern end of the site which coincided with both a geophysical anomaly and a previously recorded cropmark (part of a group of dispersed, fragmentary features of uncertain date recorded as NHER 54362).
An isolated pit in the same part of the site had a charcoal-rich fill but a sample from this deposit produced nothing else in the way of plant macrofossils or other debris. A single prehistoric flint flake found in this feature was the only find recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 February 2025.
