Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 identified nothing of definite archaeological significance. The only anomalies of note were a number of curvilinear anomalies of uncertain nature, which subsequent trial trenching showed to be of natural origin. A number of pits and ditches were though recorded, the most notable of which was a pit containing a small assemblage of Late Bronze Age pottery. The other features were all of uncertain date.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 5201).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological significance. The only responses of note were a number of short curvilinear anomalies. These could represent archaeological remains but are most likely of natural origin.
A north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly in the central part of the site corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Honingham tithe map (S2).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P3TT24; Trenches 967-976).
The 10 trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of scattered pits and three ditches.
The most notable of these features was an ovoid pit found to contain 27 sherds of probable Late Bronze Age pottery. A sample taken from the fill of this pit produced only charcoal and a small amount of burnt flint. Although three other pits of broadly similar size were identified elsewhere on the site none produced any dating evidence.
A large discrete feature partially exposed at the southern end of the site was a probable extraction pit. A Neolithic flint scraper was found in the single fill of this pit.
The three ditches recorded all lay at the northern end of the site and displayed a variety of alignments. None produced any dating evidence.
None of the geophysical anomalies tested were found to have corresponding sub-surface remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 July 2023.
