Summary

A geophysical survey in 2021/2022 identified an 'L'-shaped anomaly that may represent a pair of ditches forming the corner of a field or enclosure. This anomaly was not investigated during subsequent trial trenching in 2022 so its nature remains uncertain. The only feature recorded was an undated ditch terminus.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 18 July 2023.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 5602).
An 'L'-shaped linear anomaly was the only response of note. This is recorded as being of undetermined origin but could potentially represent north-west to south-east and north-east to south-west aligned ditches forming the corner of a field or enclosure. Other linear anomalies were most likely the result of recent agricultural activity, while a large amorphous response was probably natural in origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 July 2023.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT67; Trenches 646-648).
The three trenches excavated revealed only a single undated feature – the terminus of a north-west to south-east aligned ditch.
A colluvial layer were recorded in the central and northernmost trenches. A similar deposit was noted at the southern end of the site to the north (NHER 66336).
None of the trenches coincided with the 'L'-shaped linear anomaly recorded by the geophysical survey so its nature remains uncertain.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
