Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 recorded little of potential archaeological interest. Subsequent limited trial trenching in 2022 did though reveal a number of ditches and a single pit. These remains were mostly undated, the one exception being a ditch that was found to contain Middle Iron Age pottery.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 6202).
This survey identified little of potential archaeological interest. The only responses of note are two weak linear anomalies and a single strong discrete anomaly – all of which are regarded as being of undetermined origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 August 2026.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT79; Trenches 715-719).
Three trenches excavated in the northern half of the site revealed six ditches and a single pit. The ditches included two west-north-west to east-south-east aligned features, one of which was found to contain 27 Middle Iron Age pottery sherds (all from a single round-shouldered vessel). The other ditches displayed a variety of alignments and were all undated, as was the single pit uncovered.
Two trenches excavated at the southern end of the site revealed only an undated east-to-west aligned ditch. There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a linear feature visible to the south as soil marks and cropmarks on aerial photographs (thought to represent a field and/or parish boundary of probable medieval date - see NHER 53694).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 August 2026.
