Summary

Geophysical surveys undertaken at this location between 2017 and 2022 all revealed nothing of definite archaeological interest, with only fragmentary linear anomalies of uncertain origin recorded. Limited trial trenching in 2021 and 2022 had entirely negative results, with no archaeologically-significant features or deposits recorded.

Map

October 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on possible route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (GS23).
This survey of the northern part of the site revealed little of potential archaeological interest. The only response of note is a fragmentary roughly north-to -south aligned linear anomaly at the eastern edge of the field, which is regarded as being of undetermined origin.
A series of other linear anomalies are the result of modern ploughing, while scattered discrete ferrous responses were probably caused by objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.

October-November 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Area 9).
This survey of the southernmost part of the site revealed nothing of definite archaeological interest. A number of linear anomalies were though recorded, including a group of slightly curvilinear responses close to the eastern edge of the field. These are though all regarded as being of undetermined origin and don’t necessary represent sub-surface remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.

April-May 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Trenches 13 and 97).
The two trenches excavated in the southernmost part of the site both revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. The westernmost of these trenches coincided with one of the geophysical anomalies identified by the 2020 survey but it is possible that the eastern trench missed the anomalies recorded in this part of the site.
No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 64).
This survey of the central part of the site had largely negative results with the only responses of note being a number of fragmentary linear anomalies, all of which are regarded as being of undetermined origin. It is likely that many, if not all, of these anomalies are natural in origin, particularly the more irregular examples.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT84; Trenches 736-738).
Three trenches were excavated at this location, two to the north of the Anglian Water pipeline and one to the south.
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were recorded and no finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.
