Summary

The geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 recorded a ditch associated with a former late post-medieval field boundary but little else of potential interest. Although a number of other linear and discrete anomalies were identified these were all of irregular and of uncertain origin. Subsequent trial trenching in 2022 uncovered only a single undated pit.

Map

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2023.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 66).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest. The more notable responses include a roughly north-to south linear anomaly at the western end of the site that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Little Melton tithe map (S2). A number of sinuous linear anomalies in the eastern half of the site may also represent sub-surface remains, although these are recorded as being of undermined origin. This is also the case with a number of irregular discrete anomalies in this part of the site. It is likely that most, if not all of these irregular anomalies are of natural origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2023.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT88; Trenches 748-752).
The five trenches opened at this location revealed a single small pit. A worked flint of Neolithic/Bronze Age date was the only find recovered from its fill.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.
