Summary

A geophysical survey of the eastern part of this site in 2017 revealed a curvilinear anomaly that clearly corresponds with a potentially prehistoric ring-ditch visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (NHER 18558). Two adjacent linear anomalies were probably associated with post-medieval and modern boundaries. A subsequently geophysical survey of a strip to the west of the ring-ditch in 2021/2022 recorded a number of additional linear and discrete anomalies, although none could be confidentially identified as representing archaeologically-significant remains. A trial trench evaluation of this western strip in 2022 identified an undated pit and a ditch that had probably been associated with a former field boundary depicted on a 19th-century map.

Map

February-March 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on possible route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (GS17).
This site was one of 26 identified as a priority for examination due to their archaeological potential.
The survey identified a penannular curvi-linear anomaly that clearly corresponds with a previously recorded cropmark ring-ditch thought to potentially represent a feature of Bronze Age date (NHER 18558). Two roughly east-to-west aligned straight linear anomalies were also recorded to the north of the ring-ditch, one of which corresponds a former field boundary depicted on the Ketteringham tithe map (S1). The other appears to coincide with a modern boundary.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S2).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 7603).
This survey identified a number of scattered, fragmentary linear anomalies, although these are regarded as being of undetermined origin and therefore not necessarily associated with archaeologically-significant remains. Although numerous discrete anomalies were also recorded only two particularly strong examples were identified as being of any interest, the remainder all being of probable natural origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 February 2023.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT98; Trenches 798-808).
The 11 trenches excavated at this location revealed a pit and two ditches. The pit was a fairly unremarkable feature in the southern half of the site that produced no finds.
The two ditches lay in the northern half of the site and were both aligned north-north-west to south-south-east. These features were probably associated with a similarly-aligned former field boundary shown at this location on the Ketteringham tithe map (S1). One produced an unidentified iron object that was probably of relatively recent date.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
