Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 recorded the possible traces of a Roman road (NHER 52027), which is represented at this location by a series of cropmarks visible on aerial photographs (NHER 52024). Geophysical surveys of fields to the east revealed similar weak anomalies associated with this road but trial trenching has so far failed to identify any significant sub-surface remains (see NHERs 66379 and 66380). Although a number of other, fragmentary linear anomalies were identified in this field these were all of undetermined origin and not necessarily associated with archaeological remains.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 80).
This survey identified a number of fragmentary east-to-west aligned linear anomalies at the southern edge of the area examined. These coincide with the line of a Roman road (NHER 52027), which is represented at this location by a series of cropmarks visible on aerial photographs (NHER 52024). It should those be noted that the situation is somewhat complicated by the fact that this section of the road coincides with the line of the Keswick/Swardeston parish boundary.
Although a number of other scattered, fragmentary linear anomalies were recorded across the remainder of the site these are all regarded as being of undetermined origin and therefore not necessarily associated with archaeologically-significant remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 27 January 2023.
