Summary

A geophysical survey in 2017 and subsequent trial trenching in 2022 identified a number of ditches in the northern half of this site, one of which produced a single fragment of medieval/post-medieval vessel glass. Although the geophysical survey identified a possible trace of the Roman road that crossed the southernmost part of this site (NHER 52027) the trial trenching revealed no associated sub-surface remains.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 8002).
This survey identified two east-to-west aligned linear anomalies. The southernmost of these coincides with the line of a Roman road, the remains of which are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs of nearby fields (NHER 52027). The situation is though complicated somewhat by the fact that this section of the road coincides with the line of the Keswick/Swardeston parish boundary.
A number of additional potentially archaeologically-significant linear anomalies were recorded in the northernmost part of the site, several of which are aligned north-to-south.
Linear and discrete anomalies recorded elsewhere were all regarded as being of undetermined origin and therefore not necessarily associated with archaeological features.
There was no evidence for surviving remains associated a number of north-west to south-east and north-west to south-east aligned cropmarks mapped at the western end of this field (part of a group recorded as NHER 52031).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P3TT33; Trenches 1266-1275).
The 10 trenches excavated at this location revealed three ditches, two of which corresponded with the northernmost of the two east-to-west aligned linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey. This produced a fragment of 15th- to 17th-century vessel glass. The third ditch was an undated north-to-south aligned feature to the north which had also been identified by the geophysical survey.
There was no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with the southernmost of the two east-to-west aligned linear anomalies, which coincided with the line of a Roman road (NHER 52027). Trenches placed across the line of two of the cropmarks recorded at the western end of the site (NHER 52031) also failed to identify any associated remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 27 January 2023.
