Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021 recorded a number of linear anomalies, although these were mostly of undermined origin and not necessarily associated with archaeologically-significant remains. Subsequent trial trenching in 2021 also had largely negative results, with only two ditches recorded. One produced a single sherd of Roman pottery and the other corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps.

Map

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 25 October 2022.

December 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore substation site (Area 4).
This survey identified a number of linear anomalies, two of which correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Swardeston tithe map (S2). Although several other linear anomalies were also recorded these were all regarded as of being undetermined origin and therefore not necessarily associated with archaeologically-significant remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 October 2022.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT111; Trenches 896-906 and 921-930).
The 21 trenches excavated at this location revealed little in the way of archaeologically-significant remains, with only two east-to-west aligned ditches recorded. The southernmost of these produced a single sherd of Roman pottery, a prehistoric flint flake and a small amount of animal remains. The feature to the north produced no dating evidence but clearly corresponds with one of the former field boundaries depicted on the Swardeston tithe map (S2).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 October 2022.
